The Holiday at the Beach parade kicked off another holiday season in Flagler Beach, much to the enthusiasm of residents.
Starting with Santa's successful touchdown on the beach, the parade started at 2 p.m. on Dec. 3. Hosted and organized by the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach, the parade began with Flagler Beach Mayor Suzie Johnston riding down U.S. Highway A1A on the back of a convertible.
The parade began at N. 6th Street to go south on A1A and then west down S. 6th Street. Participants lined up beforehand to compete for awards in the following categories: “Outstanding Performance,” “Most Creative,” “Best Holiday Spirit” and “Judges Choice."
Several dance groups and local organizations and businesses participate: the Flagler Women's Club had three cars decorated, and the Flagler County Corvette Club showed up in style. Matanzas High School's band and Blue Steel drum band both performed holiday themed music for the crowd.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office brought along two motorcycle officers to drive circles and figure eight's in the street, while Sheriff Rick Staly led officers on horseback — even the Grinch made an appearance, riding atop an FCSO airboat.
The crowds lined both sides of the street, cheering as the parade passed by. Even with the beach, boardwalk and dunes damaged from the recent hurricanes, plenty of people took advantage of the balmy, 70 degree weather to swim in the ocean and fly kites in the sun.
After the parade, Santa was available for photos from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Flagler Beach City Hall.
