SIDELINES: Gymnast Lauren Davis wins four events at Region 8 Championships

Palm Coast gymnast Lauren Davis, a sixth grader at Indian Trails Middle School, won four events at the USA Gymnastics Region 8 Championships April 27-29 in Foley, Alabama.

Lauren placed first in fault (9.475), first in bars (9.675), first in floor (9.650) and first in all-around (38.2). She also placed second in beam (9.4).

She competed against gymnasts from eight states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana).

Lauren trains at Flight Gymnastics in Ormond Beach under coach Antjuan Satterfield. She has been a competitive gymnast for four years. She qualified for the regional with a sixth-place all-around finish at the Florida State meet on April 7 in Lakeland.

Lauren is the of daughter of Demetrius and Charitie Davis.

Rogers wins district coaching honor

Bunnell Vice Mayor John Rogers was named Florida Athletic Coaches Association District Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

Rogers’ Atlantic High team went 12-13 in his first season with the Sharks. He turned around a program the won one game over the previous two seasons.

Rogers said when he took the job he wanted to field both a JV and a varsity team.

“They didn’t think they would have enought participants to have a varsity team let alone a JV team,” he said. “We were able to have both teams and our JV team had a winning record.

 Rogers previously coached girls basketball at Seabreeze, Pine Ridge and Calvary Christian.

Free tennis program in Palm Coast

The City of Palm Coast is inviting residents to celebrate National Tennis Month with its complimentary “Welcome to Tennis” program at the Southern Recreation Center. 

The city will also host the “Toast-To-You Mother's Day Round Robin” for adults 21 and over at 9 a.m. on May 18 at the Southern Recreation Center, 1290 Belle Terre Parkway. The entry fee is $15 per person, which includes a beverage ticket.

During this month’s Welcome to Tennis program, which includes a special Mother’s Day event,  certified professional coaches will offer 60-minute clinics on tennis fundamentals at the Southern Recreation Center. Participants can receive guidance from tennis mentors on rules, scoring, etiquette and more.

The sessions are scheduled for Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and Mondays at 11 a.m. for individuals aged 15 and older. The city provides loaner racquets free of charge.

“These activities are perfect for beginners, experienced players or those returning to tennis, offering a fun way to get active and enjoy tennis … Our goal is to make tennis accessible and enjoyable for everyone,” a city press release stated.

Additionally, residents can play tennis for free at Belle Terre Park, Seminole Woods Neighborhood Park and James F. Holland Memorial Park.

Flagler Schools sports physicals

Advent Health physicians and care teams are providing free sports physicals and ECG heart screenings for Flagler Schools students in sixth to 12th grade. The physicals will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 16, at Flagler Palm Coast High School.

The event is open to students who plan to participate in athletics, JROTC, fire academy or band.
