Matanzas’ Rilee Whitmore and Seabreeze’s Sofia James had to settle for the second- and third-place podium steps at the District 6-2A girls weightlifting championships on Jan. 25 at Matanzas High. They could end the state championships in the same spots.
Whitmore and James were competing against New Smyrna Beach’s Mopeola Tofade, who won the district’s 169-pound traditional title with a total of 375 pounds in the clean and jerk and bench press. Whitmore was second with 350 pounds and James was third with 340. Tofade and Whitmore have the top totals in Class 2A while James is fourth heading into this week’s regional championships.
Whitmore, who broke four Matanzas school records at the district meet, also finished second to Tofade in Olympic competition (snatch and clean and jerk) with a 310-pound total to Tofade’s 315. James was third with 305 pounds. Those are also among the top totals in the state.
